There once was a Ship - Book One

Description

It was a forgotten Fleet. Some called it the Rust Fleet, others the Ghost Fleet. The U.S.S. Largo was one of those ships, an old Four Stack Destroyer, built to fight another war, the war to end all wars. Given a few more years she would have been towed up stream to Portland where the cutting torches of the scrap yards waited. Then a sudden call to arms by a desperate nation gave this ship, and others like it, a new life and purpose. From across the nation the men began to arrive. Young and inexperienced men stood beside the old hands who had served in the Asiatic Fleet on destroyers and gun boats. Men who had spent a lifetime fighting bandits and communist and one another in bars along the Yangtze River. Among these men the ship and crew join together. They would sail to the South Pacific, to the Solomon Islands, a land the naval strategists never dreamed existed before August 1942. They had planned for a major fleet action, not a campaign like this. Now the advance begins, and the road leads to Tokyo.
